Outback Steakhouse passes Reinspection

Laughlin, Nevada

At the end of February (2014) we reported that the Outback Steakhouse in the Aquarius Casino had received a less than passing Health Inspection on 2-2-14. See the original details here.

We are happy to note that upon a reinspection by the Southern Nevada Health District they received a top rating of an A with no demerits.

Hopefully whatever issues led to the bad inspection have been cleared up for good.

In other recent health inspections:

McDonald's at Harrah's Laughlin got a B rating and 19 demerits in a health inspection on 2-20-14.

St. Patrick's Day in Laughlin, Nevada 2014

Two festivals are taking place this weekend, plus just about every Casino, Bar and Restaurant in Laughlin should be able to fill your desire for good Irish fare and drinks! There are just too many menu options** to cover, so stop in and check out your favorite spot.

Even though St. Patrick's Day, March 17th falls on a Monday this year. That isn't going to stop anyone from celebrating early.

March 14th-17th is the 5th annual Shamrocks & Shenanigans takes place on the Laughlin Riverwalk behind the Colorado Belle and Edgewater Casinos.

Have a few Irish beverages...a Guinness or a Irish Car Bomb come to mind first for us. If you like the green beer there should be some of that flowing too.
Listen to some great free live entertainment by bands Killian's Angels and Paddy's Pig.
Eat some traditional Irish food.

In addition to the Shamrocks and Shenanigans Fest at the Colorado Belle, there is another St. Patrick's Day Party Fest going on, March 14-16th at the Golden Nugget Laughlin. This event takes place in the front parking area of the Golden Nugget Laughlin. This area becomes a club with a bar, stage and food booths.

Enjoy the Live Music, Food, Beer, Spirits, Giveaways and Prizes. Entertainment is being provided by bands Tony Marquest Band and Venus Rising. Music is free, food and drinks available for purchase.

Sunday 11am - 5pm

Over at the Tropicana in the Caboose Lounge they will have Pat O'Brien performing on March 16th and 17th from 6pm to 10pm. He always puts on a great show and with Pat you can't any more Irish than that for St. Patrick's Day.

**Check the Laughlin Entertainer (it comes out every Wednesday -online and as a magazine distributed in the Casinos). They do a good job of listing and telling what specials the various restaurants have for special events and Holidays. The March 12th issue should have details.

Reba McIntyre will also be in Laughlin performing at the all new Laughlin Event Center on Saturday, March 15th. She was in Laughlin last year around this time too. With it being St. Patrick's weekend and her show, expect it to be a busier than usual weekend with more traffic and people (but don't worry this isn't Vegas--Lucky for us!). Last year the show sold out. It is at a new, bigger venue this year but should be very popular. More info on her show is here.

A Murder Mystery at the Laughlin Library

The Laughlin Library is holding an interactive Murder Mystery Play.

"Murder at Gooseneck Lake"

Saturday, March 8th 7pm and Sunday, March 9th at 6pm.

Join in the fun and help solve the mystery. As a member of a team, you’ll get to question suspects and put your detective skills to good use!

Attendance is free, but you have to sign-up in advance, since space is limited.

If you haven't been to the Laughlin Library, be sure to check out all the great things going on there. This is a wonderful resource in Lauglin for both residents and visitors.

The Laughlin Library (at 15,000 sq. feet) is one of the largest rural libraries in Clark County. They have over 70,000 volumes,s a large meeting room, small conference room and an excellent gallery. They also periodically show free movies. In addition they offer free wireless Internet access. Visit the Laughlin Library main webpage here.

Mardi Gras, Music, Bull Riding, and Comedy in Laughlin this weekend

There is a little bit of everything going on in Laughlin this coming weekend - March 7-9th (2014).

Take your pick, great, free music and entertainment, good food, cool drinks, bull riding, dancing, and comedy. There is something for everyone.

We already mentioned the annual Mardi Gras Festival on the Laughlin Riverwalk by the Colorado Belle and Edgewater Casinos. Music (Zydeco and Cajun), Cajun Cuisine, Drinks and what looks like very nice weather. The festival runs Friday through Sunday.

Lil' Elmo and the Cosmos

More (free) live music and entertainment is going on inside the Colorado Belle Casino. Rock and Roll played like it is meant to be from Lil' Elmo and the Cosmos. They will be performing at the River Bar Friday through Sunday (8pm to 1am). This bar is located right off the main Casino floor. Definitely worth catching!

Just up the street from the Edgewater Casino, the very first event ever held at the new Laughlin Event Center kicks off on Saturday night with CBR - Championship Bull Riding. Get more details here.

In the Comedy on the Edge show at the Edgewater Casino, Luis Villasenor and Kevin Young will be performing March 7th-9th. Tickets are only 10 dollars, no drink minimum.

And finally on a smaller scale but just as important, the Colorado River Marine Division Music and Dance Extravaganza is taking place in the Starview Room at the Riverside Resort Casino on March 9th (2-6pm) This annual event is sponsored by the Colorado River Chapter 1st Marine Division Association will help fund the annual 2014 Tri-City Veterans Day Parade. Music will be provided by the Charley Connor Band as well as some special guests. Dancing, raffles, door prizes, and food and beverages available for purchase.

Remember all times listed are Nevada Time. Until the time change at 2am on Saturday night Arizona is one hour ahead of Nevada.

Ghost Town at the Colorado Belle

The Ghost Town on D Deck at the Colorado Belle

If you take a ride on the long escalators at the Colorado Belle you will find yourself on the "D Deck" in a nice, gaudy ghost town. All the restaurants and shops have closed in slow succession.

Long before the restaurants closed, there was a Candy shop. This closed. The only thing left is the sign. The first restaurant that closed was Tortilla's (the Mexican spot).

More closings soon followed. There was a very nice Italian eatery, Mangia. Good food and a great view that overlooked the Colorado River. Closed. The 24 hour diner, the Gallery Cafe closed.

Even the small desk where at one time you could buy Keno tickets closed.

Soon they built a new gift shop on the Casino floor and closed the one upstairs.

When the opening date for the new Loading Dock Bar was near they quietly shuttered Mark Twain's Chicken and Ribs.

The last holdout was the Captain's Buffet. They shut the Captain down on the day the Loading Dock opened on the Riverwalk.

Now all you will see on D Deck is an occasional person or couple wandering around. Perhaps they thinking about what used to be there or why they all closed. Or maybe they are return visitors thinking about how they miss a spot they had previously enjoyed.

It will be interesting to see what they do with all this space.

Mardi Gras in Laughlin, Nevada 2014

The annual Mardi Gras festival on the Riverwalk by the Colorado Belle and Edgewater Casinos is set for March 7th-9th.

There will be two bands providing free entertainment:
Mark St. Mary
Bennie and the Swampgators

We found a clip from 2010 when Mark St. Mary played on the River in front of the Colorado Belle.

The new Loading Dock Bar and Grille has been built and is now open in that space, so the area looks completely different.

Just yesterday we went by there and they are still finishing the nice band area right on the point overlooking the Colorado River.

Food and drink will be available for sale and feature various southern style items.

The Mari Gras fest hours are
Friday from 4-9pm
Saturday from 11am-7pm
Sunday from noon to 7pm

After this....Get Ready for St. Patrick's Day!
Then more good times will be available on the Riverwalk the following week. Since St. Patrick's Day, March 17th falls on a Monday this year no one is going to wait to celebrate. The week before kicks off the On March 14-16th Shamrocks & Shenanigans takes place at the Colorado Belle.

Pharmacy coming to Laughlin

**We can't get a CVS or Walgreens on every corner* like in Vegas but Laughlin is getting a Drive-Through Pharmacy soon.**

The other morning we noticed this building and sign on Casino Drive right across from the Riverside Casino.

Then on March 2nd the local newspaper, the Laughlin Times, reported an unnamed Bullhead City pharmacy will be opening later this year across from the Riverside.

This pharmacy has been negotiated by executives at the Riverside. According to a the Riverside, the pharmacy will also share space with a drug testing facility, “which will prove to be a great convenience to prospective employees of the Laughlin casinos who currently have to drive to Arizona to take a pre-employment toxicology screening.”

The targeted opening date is sometime in August of this year.

*We know when we think Vegas and "the Strip", we think CVS or Walgreens! Don't you?

In our opinion we do not go to Vegas to shop at CVS and Walgreens and think their presence as anchors in so many places there detracts from what Las Vegas is as a destination.

But a pharmacy in Laughlin will be a convenience for for local residents, as well as visitors and tourists.

Now if we can only get a grocery store or reasonably priced market (hint to Aldape's).

Wild Style Burgers and Pizza coming to the Edgewater

Back in January the McDonald's located in the Edgewater Casino closed. Just this week they started to put up a temporary wall so they could do some work. Looks like Wild Style Burgers and Pizza will be going in the old McDonald's space and that it will be expanded. The pics we received show they just started this.

When we went by today all the workers equipment was gone and the walls were all smooth, painted, and seamless. At least they didn't put up the big black plastic sheeting like they did when Capriotti's was built last year.

We love to see that the management for both the Colorado Belle and Edgewater have stepped up their game and made significant improvements and investments to their properties.

No word on what it might open.

Update: June 2014

Looks like it may open by the end of the month!

Random Observations at the Loading Dock and Pioneer

The last two days have been cooler, no sun, clouds, some rain in Laughlin. It hasn't stopped people from being out on the Riverwalk or even down on the beach area (the water was low). The temperatures were still decent, not too windy even.

Heading into the Colorado Belle the first thing noticeable on the Riverwalk was that they are progressing with what looks like the Band Stage area. This is in a nice spot right on the point overlooking the Colorado River.

They better hurry up! There is a Mardi Gras festival set for next weekend there.

Plus since the outdoor dining area at the Loading Dock Bar and Grille is open already, we have heard a couple grumbles that it is not enjoyable to eat there with a nice view of the construction and the noise.

Was cool to see the outdoor bar (Chill?) was open today. We were going to stop and see what they had but there were quite a few people and the bartender wasn't especially speedy.

After leaving the Colorado Belle for the Golden Nugget we saw that there was a new Crane/Lift parked at the Pioneer Casino by the River Rick sign. This a different one than the last one they had parked there, but still no one working on the sign. Hopefully soon. We first noticed someone working on the sign on February 20th. Police line (caution tape) was still up making for a nice image.
