Laughlin Slot Machine Hold Percentages are just behind the Vegas Strip

People often ask about the best place to play the slots (and win). Because Laughlin has been viewed as a inexpensive destination, a common misconception seems to be that Laughlin has looser slots.   Statistics are showing this is not true.

A recent publication by the UNLV Center for Gaming Research reported slot hold percentages of the eleven largest (by revenue) reporting areas in Nevada.

As expected, Las Vegas Strip has a significantly higher hold than other reporting areas.  Surprisingly, Laughlin is ranked second. 



Slot hold is the average slot hold percentage (or win percentage) for the period in question as released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board in its
Gaming Revenue Reports.

This is basically the amount the Casino takes as their gaming revenue on the slots.   A higher hold percentage means less payout to players (over time).

For the period 2004-2018 the Las Vegas Strip slot hold (average) was 7.32%.
Laughlin was just behind them at 7.10%

The report from UNLV also shows the slot hold percentage by year.   Laughlin hold percentages are once again higher than all the other areas in recent years.



A quick look at the statistics shows that Laughlin slot holds for 2018 are at the upper tier of all the areas, with only the Las Vegas Strip having a higher hold for most months.


This is not a good trend, especially when combined with the introduction of resort fees in Laughlin, higher room rates, increases in prices at restaurants.

The value destination advantage that Laughlin once enjoyed is seemingly diminishing.  Especially when the gambling, at least as far as slots, is tight.

A campaign by the Laughlin EconomicDevelopment Corporation resulted in local property owners recovering $4.06 million of $4.09 in unused bonds from three Clark County Special Improvement Districts for Needles Highway, Unnamed Wash, and Hiko Springs Dam and flood control channels. Only about $28,000 went unclaimed by the deadline. That was the word given by Bob Bilbray, Strategic Development Advisor for the LEDC, at the Sept. 11 Town Advisory Board meeting.

The Laughlin situation will result in changes to Nevada law when the Legislature meets from Feb. 4-June 3. Bilbray said Dr. Joe Hardy, R-District 23 (including Laughlin and Searchlight), has an early bill draft request to amend state law to, among other things, increase the 60-day limit for property owners to reclaim their share of a district's unused bonds. In Laughlin's case the funds sat in the Clark County Treasurer's Office for 12 years. Treasurer Laura Fitzpatrick agreed that feature and some others need to be changed to allow more time, similar to the deadlines the Nevada Revised Statutes impose on tax lien sales by the County Assessors' Offices. Joining the effort will be Clark County Commissioners Steve Sisolak, whose district includes Laughlin and Searchlight), and Jim Gibson.
In its effort, the LEDC even mailed reminder cards printed in red to those owning residences, sent out news releases, made personal contacts, and did everything it could to make this "the most successful bond refund in Clark County history, but only because this community got up and yelled like h---," Bilbray said.

The strategic advisor noted that 1,575 checks were received (some persons owned more than one affected parcel and thus received a check for each parcel). Only two owners failed to file within the deadline, and he said a letter to the editor by one of them was not a valid complaint against the county, since the time limit was set by the Legislature. He spoke at the end of the meeting when the LTAB hears public comments about matters not on its agenda.

Laughlin Gaming Revenue UP for July 2018

Nevada gaming revenue decreased 0.16% to $996.4 million in July of 2018 compared to the same month a year ago.  Locally, in Laughlin, gaming revenue was $41,363,521 in July of 2018 compared to $40,647,163 in July of 2017.  This is a 1.76% increase.

The gaming win percentage broken down by area shows Nevada statewide was down slightly, -0.16%.

The Las Vegas strip was the primary reason, all other areas reported showed increases.  Have out of control resort fees and parking fees affected gaming and visitors to the strip locations?

Laughlin Gaming Revenue Down for June 2018

Laughlin gaming revenue numbers were down by 1.87% for June of 2018, compared to the same period last year.

However, overall for the fiscal year to date Laughlin is still up 4.34%.

Gaming Coming Back to Pioneer Casino

Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall to Resume Gaming

(*pending license approval)

The August 8, 2018 9:00 am Nevada Gaming Control Board agenda
shows activity indicating gaming is poised to return to the Pioneer
Hotel & Gambling Hall in Laughlin, NV.

Gaming has been interrupted since the new owners, The New Pioneer LLC, took
over as of May 1, 2018.   See our article about gaming being closed.

Intrepid Gaming, LLC with Jon David Berkley has applied for licensing to do
business as Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall.

Provided the applications are approved by the Nevada Gaming Control Board it
will then go to the Nevada Gaming Commission for final approval at their next
meeting in mid August.  If approved by the commission, gaming will be clear to resume.

We are hearing gaming will start just in time for the Labor Day Weekend, on August 31st.  (subject to approvals and an official, not yet made announcement by the company)
