Harrah's Laughlin Diamond Lounge Redemption!

Laughlin, NV
Harrah's Laughlin
Diamond Lounge

A few weeks ago we visited and wrote about our not-so-great visit to the Diamond Lounge at Harrah's in Laughlin.

We later heard from a couple people who said they visited after we did and that things had much improved.  Hoping but not expecting much change so quickly, we made another trip over there to see for ourselves.

The Changes and Good Stuff:

We were welcomed by a very friendly host at the podium by the Lounge.

The lounge was very busy, in fact there were only two tables open.  Even the outside tables were full.

There were numerous people working the floor, including a very friendly and prompt waitress who took a drink order for us.

Other employees were quickly clearing tables and helping other guests.

Everyone who worked there was friendly and they all had on uniform black shirts with a martini/drink emblazoned on the back.

The bartender was very pleasant this time as well.

The floor was clean and swept, no soup left spilled this time.

The sad, messy and un-replenished little food area we experienced last time was a thing of the past. This time it was clean, well stocked and employees kept coming out with fresh items.

The snacks and food were fresher than our previous visit and good.  Keeping in mind this is a lounge not a buffet, the choices were nice.  From what we could tell many people come there and act like it is a buffet but each to their own.

All the TV monitors were on and working.

We had a drink and a couple snacks.  The Bloody Mary and Martini we had this time were very good. On our way out the host was friendly and wished us good luck.

It's not 5 stars and not as nice as the ones we have visited in Las Vegas, but it is a 200 percent improvement.  Good job and congrats to the wonderful employees there and whoever helped make this change happen.

We don't go there often, but if we find ourselves at Harrah's now we know the Diamond Lounge is a good little spot to drop in for a break from the Casino floor.  Especially with the cooler weather if you can snag one of the outdoor seats overlooking the River.

What is the Diamond Lounge?
The Diamond Lounge is provided by Total Rewards Players Club - Caesars Entertaiment as a perk or benefit to qualified Diamond Member or Seven Stars Card Member.  Members can bring a guest along.  Drinks and Food are no cost.  To get to the Diamond level you have to play the equivalent earning 15,000 tier credits in a year. This is roughly equivalent to 1 tier credit earned for every 5 dollars played or spent in a Casears property.  15,000 tier credits would be about $75,000 played through the machines.  Seven Stars is even higher requiring 150,000 tier credits!     Besides the one in Laughlin, there are several in Vegas including at Caesars Palace, Paris, Planet Hollywood, Harrah's, The Rio, The Flamingo, and we hear a new one coming to the LINQ once it changes from the Quad.

For Immediate Release:

Lights, Camera, Action!! LIFF returns for 3rd Annual Film Festival

Laughlin, (Nev.) – Filmmakers, writers, directors and actors from all over the world will converge on the small gambling mecca next month for the third annual Laughlin International Film Festival.
A long line-up of independent films from all over will be brought to life on the big screen at Phoenix Stadium 9 theater inside the Laughlin Outlet Center from Oct. 16-19, 2014.
“This years film line-up promises to be a great, diverse mix of independent short and feature-length films,” said Erik Karsen Puhm, director of LIFF.
The event will kick off on Oct. 16 with red carpet arrivals followed by a special screening of a feature-length film that will be announced in mid-September. Last year's opening film was Red Wing, starring Luke Perry, Frances Fisher, Bill Paxton and newcomer Breann Thompson. Thompson, along with other cast and crew members attended the film festival and held a meet-and-greet shortly following the premiere.
Red Wing won the 2013 U.S. LIFF Pick category and went on to win at several other film festivals across the nation. The indie film is now available for streaming on demand with Amazon, Hulu and Netflix.
Director and writer Brian Brown, of Needles, will premiere his newest short flick Verdict. This is Brown's third time submitting a film into the film festival. Verdict centers around the high profile trial of a woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death.
“The story goes through the trial and really shows both sides of the case and leaning on both sides of guilty or innocent,” Brown explained. “The ending will definitely have the audience talking for sure.”
Brown added that he filmed a large portion of the courtroom scenes at the Mohave County Superior Courthouse, in Kingman, in just one day.
“Even though it wasn't the easiest time frame, we shot about 90 percent of it in a day,” says Brown. “The cast and crew have worked together on a lot of projects, so it really helped make the most of our limited time in the location.”
In 2012, Brown took home the award for Best Local Film for his first short film, Choices, and again in 2013 for his movie Dream Date.
Newcomer to the film industry, veteran journalist Andrea Z. Smith, of Needles, has written and produced a documentary titled Victim for this years film festival.
The documentary is based on Smith's script“If I Die Before I Wake” that was broadcast in 2004 by ABC/FOX networks as well as news station KESQ in Palm Desert, California.
News reporter Mina Nguyen gave a compelling report on rape survivor Sunny Coleman, who later became an advocate for victims of sexual assault. Her case in 1986 was the first rape case in Southern California where a new scientific technique—DNA—was used to apprehend the assailants.
Brown and Smith are just one of many film industry movers and shakers that will be on hand for this years LIFF festivities.
“Last year, we had over 50 entries that included several feature-length, short films, three
television pilots, music videos and 10 documentaries,” said Dave Davidson, LIFF's director of
--CONT--
operations. “The one thing we can't stress enough is that this festival is geared for everyone.”
Davidson added that the film festival is also an opportunity for filmmakers to showcase their work. “We just want everyone to come out and enjoy the movies that are being screened,” he said.
Those interested in attending four days of fun-filled activities and screenings of films can purchase discounted pre-sale VIP “all access” passes for only $75 a piece ($55 for seniors) during the month of September.
The VIP passes includes admittance to all the film screenings during the four-day event, as well as entry to all the social networking activities.
Social events include the “red carpet” arrival, screening of the opening film and an “after party” at Casa Serrano's Laughlin on Oct. 16; Cosmic Bowling and Halloween bash on Oct. 17 at the Riverside Resort and Casino bowling alley; LIFF's award ceremony inside the Tropicana Pavilion Theater on Oct. 18; and a morning breakfast with a panel session with several directors, writers and film creators on Oct. 19.
A full list of movies and screening times will be announced in the coming weeks. The discounted VIP “all access” passes are available for purchase online at www.laughlinfilmfestival.com. All LIFF VIP tickets will be available for pick up at “will call” at the LIFF sales table which can be found in front of the Phoenix 9 Stadiums beginning at 9 a.m. on Oct. 16.
For those not wanting to attend all four days of events can purchase individual film tickets for features and short blocks showings at $10 for adults and $8 for seniors/students. Each short block consists of approximately an hour and a half of short films and documentaries.
These tickets will be available for purchase at the LIFF sales table throughout the festival.

Harrah's Wall and other Random-ness

Laughlin, NV

Harrah's Laughlin.

Sometimes things you see in Laughlin are a bit quirky.    At Harrah's Laughlin there is a round wall right near where the Tour buses unload.  Over the past few years this has had a series of different looks.

For the longest time it was like this:

Then they removed the it and stenciled a new welcome.  Every time we went there we expected the letters and logo would have some color added.  This never happened.  For nearly a year it looked like this:

Then all of a sudden, around the time they redid the landscaping and removed the fountain by the Casino entrance, they fixed the cracks, refinished it and put up some sort of speakers or boxes.  It looked like this for awhile:

Just the other week we went to Harrah's again and were welcomed with another new version of the wall.  This time it is in color but almost looks like a stencil spray painted.  The current version of the wall:

What do you think?  Is it a good look? Or should a property owned by Caesars Entertainment have done better?

In our opinion, we think that after 3+ years they could come up with something a bit more professional or modern.

In case you missed it--
Other Random pictures and observations around Laughlin this week.

A group apparently representing a Carpenters Union was protesting (sort of) about Immigrant Labor Abuse at the Golden Nugget.  This was seen for a couple days on Casino Drive this week.

Aquarius put up new light post signs advertising their river cruises.  These are near the Riverwalk entrance to the Casino and near the booth where they sell the tickets for the boat cruises.

At the Tropicana Laughlin they are still working on the new Bingo Room inside the Casino.  Meanwhile, on the outside on Victory Plaza that runs along Casino Drive they are enhancing the area for entertainment and music.

New.  Possibly, new.  We may not have noticed it before but just saw that the Dreyers Ice Cream in the Aquarius now sells hot dogs.  Probably was hard to miss this sign but we could of.  Dreyers is right next to the Subway and the McDonalds.  All of them are open 24 hours.

Closed and Forgotten.

Emerald City Smoothie in the Riverside closed.  This was right next to Fatburger.  In a new partnership Fatburger now sells chicken wings at Buffalo's in the same location.

And finally, over at Harrah's, Baja Blue is closed. In that location they are putting in a new Guy Fieri Restaurant set to open in December of 2014.

Guy Fieri's New Laughlin Restaurant Update

Laughlin, Nevada

Harrah's Laughlin

Update:  12-22-2014    Sneak Peek at the El Burro Borracho menu and restaurant opening soon at Harrah's Laughlin

Longtime, but seldom open restaurant, Baja Blue is now closed at Harrah's Laughlin.  The space is currently being remodeled to house a new Guy Fieri Restaurant.   Signs say opening Winter of 2014. No exact date has been announced. Several sources have said by mid-December.   The name and menu are still unannounced as well, though an earlier press release said the menu would include regional favorites.

Our personal best guess is that the name may be similar to his NY and Vegas restaurants and include "Kitchen and Bar".   As it is replacing Baja Blue, we also expect to see some southwestern and Mexican based food items as the regional favorites.   As details are released we will share them here.

The location of the restaurant is at the front of the Casino on an outer wall that also has an open patio space.

Wouldn't it be cool if they included outdoor seating similar to the one at his restaurant on the Vegas Strip at the Quad (soon to be LINQ)?

And...will Guy Fieri himself make an appearance for the grand opening in Laughlin?

Guy Fieri at the opening of his restaurant in Las Vegas

Update since this article was posed - Editor's Note:
Since sharing this article we had a chance to try Guy Fieri's restaurant in Las Vegas.  After doing so we have a few thoughts about whether this will be a hit or miss in Laughlin.

Will Guy Fieri's Food Hit or Miss in Laughlin?

Surf N Turf Special at the Hickory Pit

Laughlin, NV
Edgewater Hotel and Casino

Hickory Pit Steakhouse

We had not visited the Hickory Pit Steakhouse in the Edgewater Hotel and Casino since May of 2013.  After that somewhat unpleasant meal and service we took a break from visiting this location.

We met friends at the Edgewater over the weekend and they wanted to go to the Hickory Pit.  Since there was still time for the Surf and Turf special* we agreed.  It is advertised as from 4-6 pm daily.  For $19.99 you can choose from the following items:

The special is served with a choice of potato or rice pilaf, veggies, and a house salad.

In the past there has always been a wait to get in. This was the case again even though just like the previous time, there were open tables.  We cringed slightly when we noticed Julie the same lead hostess we had last time was working the door.  This time we were happy to see she was very friendly.  Still, we had to wait about 15 minutes.  Just a thought for the Edgewater, implement the use of the beepers that light up to let people know their table is ready--or text them.

We  got seated before the Surf and Turf special would of ended.  When we asked our server, Bo, he said the 19.99 special was not available because there was a "Special Event" in town.  We were told we could get the same thing for $25.99 but if we wanted a salad it would be ala carte and cost $3.99 more.  This seemed like a bit of a gouge** on patrons but we went ahead and ordered it.  Last time we didn't care for the NY Strip so this time we both chose the Lobster Tail and Filet Mignon.   Plus a shrimp cocktail to share.  And a glass of wine.

Oddly enough the wine was served in a wet glass covered in water droplets.  This happened the last time we visited too.  Why???   We understand they have to wash the glasses but is there such a short supply that they are served wet and not dried.  Even the bartender or server could of wiped them down prior to pouring the wine.

Why don't they wipe the water off the wine glasses?

We didn't get a picture of the wine glass this time, but here is the one from last year.   This time it looked the same.

The bread basket came out first. The two types of bread were fresh.  Last time there were three kinds.  But this is no big deal.  Change happens.

The salads were good even though the dressing was slightly runny.

The Shrimp Cocktail (5 shrimp) was good.  Not as good as we had a couple days earlier at the Cove Lounge in the Aquarius.  So, by default we were comparing them.  These were smaller, not quite cold enough and the cocktail sauce didn't have much of a bite to it.  Again, the sauce was a bit runny too.

The Lobster Tail was very good, sweet and cooked just right.  Warm drawn butter is a thing of the past in most restaurants.  Remember the little lobster butter dishes over a tea candle? Our butter was melted but basically cold.  The filet was a good cut, cooked perfectly as ordered.  The side of veggies was average and could of used some seasoning.  One of us liked the green beans, the other did not.  Same thing with the carrots.  No one cared for the squash.

Since this non-special did NOT include a choice of a baked potato we had the very average tasting rice pilaf and garlic mashed.  Yes, a Baked Potato would of been another up charge.

Service this time was too fast.  We felt very rushed. In fact, when eating the shrimp cocktail there was one left and one of us had placed it on the side plate for a second.  The server came by and scooped up a dirty plate and grabbed the cocktail sauce in a flash and was gone.  Didn't ask if we were done or needed anything else.  Who needed cocktail sauce for the last shrimp anyway?!

We chose to skip dessert.  The atmosphere just didn't seem that enjoyable with the rush we felt were getting.  Once we said no dessert, the rush ended. We had to wait about 10 minutes for our check.  We paid our bill and took our 2 complimentary Andes chocolate mints and left.  Julie was friendly again as we left, thanking us and wishing us a good evening.

Overall considering the quality the meal was good.  If you actually get the Surf and Turf Special it is a good value for $19.99.  Otherwise, you end up paying $30 or more for the same thing, which is a bit high.

The **Gouge - Our mini-rant on up-charging, exceptions, and exclusions

This is something you see quite often.  If a special is listed as 19.95 Monday-Friday for set hours, it should be honored all the time.  Customers should not have to check for fine print exclusions. We would bet most of the people (like us) weren't even going to the special event and had to pay the extra cost just because it existed. Our non-special special ended up costing us 20 dollars more.  It is our belief and OPINION that restaurants would be better served to offer their advertised specials to their customers all of the time.  Don't make exceptions or exclusions that often the customer wouldn't even know about until they sat down. It leads to a feeling of disappointment or that one is being gouged a bit. Wouldn't it be better to have your customer be happy, feel good, and by word of mouth recommend you?   Repeat customers and new ones based on recommendations has to be worth more than the 20 extra dollars you take in during a special event. In fact, if a person has that extra 20 dollars in their pocket there is probably a good chance they will still spend it in your Casino later or on the way out.  It is all about the total experience.  We would of spent the extra 20 and probably more in the Casino if we had saved it on dinner. Plus we would of enjoyed dinner more without the feeling a being price gouged just because there were cowboys riding bulls just up the street on that particular night.

Pizza Slice at Wild Style

Laughlin, Nevada
Edgewater Hotel and Casino
Wild Style Burgers & Pizza

We were leery about trying Wild Style after their less than stellar health inspection on 8-8-2014.  We found ourselves walking by and hungry at lunchtime.  So we decided to roll the dice and give it a try.

The Good:

Turns out they make a pretty good slice of pizza at a decent price ($3.49). The cheese was good, didn't seem cheap or cheese-food like. The size was of the slice was good and it had a nice, crisp, thin crust.  It could of used a bit more sauce, however, what was there under the cheese was tasty.   They also serve it in a nice little box, perfect for take out.

A nice added touch, they have two kinds of beer on tap from Pint's Microbrewery. Even though it is served in a plastic cup it was worth the $4.50.

Next time we may try their burger. The fixings bar looked extensive.  The burgers being served to other customers looked pretty good.

A Slice and a Beer for about 8 bucks, not too bad.
There is a nice view of the River on one side of the dining area.  If you can get a table near the window that has been cleared and cleaned.

The Not-So-Good:

As is somewhat customary at the Edgewater, the service was less than friendly and someone was not cleaning up in the dining area or the counter area.

After their bad inspection this isn't necessarily a good sign.   They did have their subsequent re-inpsection A Grade posted.

Overall, we recommend the Pizza and Pint's Beer on tap.  Management might want to just keep a reminding their employees about cleaning and being a bit more hospitable.  We will keep an eye on the Southern Nevada Health District Inspections.  Hopefully their one bad one is a thing that will remain in the  past.

Toby Keith Tour returns to Laughlin

Laughlin, NV

Toby Keith will be at the Laughlin Event Center in Laughlin Nevada on October 18, 2014 on his Shut Up & Hold On tour.

He performed a great show last year in Laughlin -- almost a year ago to the day.  That concert was at the old Amphitheater site.  This show should be even better at the much nicer, new Laughlin Event Center.

You can check for tickets at LaughlinEventCenter.Com or with the various Hotels/Casinos.   Signs and advertisements from the local Hotels and Casinos show they have tickets and/or ticket and room packages.

Ticket prices are listed at: $20; $50; $65; $85; $100; $125

It is good to see that the ticket prices from last year to this year are almost exactly the same.

Showtime is 8PM.

Reminder:  There is no on site parking at the Laughlin Event Center.  Hotels and Casinos generally operate shuttle service (free) and there is parking at the mall.  It is also a short walk (albeit uphill on the way) from Casino Drive.  In the past they have also closed Bruce Woodbury from Casino Drive to Thomas Edison from 4pm to 11pm on the night of concerts.  We expect this will be the case again for this concert.

Gold Diggers passes re-inspection with "flying" colors

Laughlin, NV
Fruit Flies in the Liquor Bottles - More Pictures Below
Update on the closure of the Gold Diggers club in the Golden Nugget Laughlin.   They were closed briefly by the Southern Nevada Health District on August 30th (2014) for 36 demerits following an inspection.

Closed on August 30th for violations.
They are now open, having passed a re-inspection on September 2nd with 0 demerits and a A grade.

Note: The SNHD is still using the old name Tarzans for their reporting on Gold Diggers. Click on any image for a larger view.

Re-Inspection results for Gold Diggers

It normally takes 40 or more demerits for the health department to shut a place down.  Gold Diggers had just 36 so we did a bit more digging (no pun intended?).  We  came across a dirty dining report by Action 13 News out of Vegas.

The list of the origin demerits are below:

Original demerits for inspection of 8-30-14

It appears that fruit flies swimming around inside the multi-use liquor bottles pushed the inspection over the edge and caused the closure.  This was a repeat critical violation at Gold
Diggers.

What is a multi-use bottle?   The ones at the bar that they use to pour your drink from.

At Gold Diggers, they were using Black Flag household flying insect killer to try to control a problem they must of been aware of.   Apparently this did not work and is also a violation. Restaurants and bars are required to use to use professional pest control.

The flies in the bottles are the reason they were shut down without even reaching 40 demerits.

Other violations included containers of milk stored at unsafe temperatures.

Gallon containers of chemicals weren't labeled.

Inspectors also found violations with hand washing and the hand sink. The ice scoop handle was touching the ice used for drinks.   No sanitizer was present in sanitizer buckets. Soda hoses were dangling and subject to contamination.

Inspectors were also concerned about holes in the walls, dirty walls and dirty baseboards.

Needless to say, no one can tell what is behind the scenes at any restaurant or bar you visit. One just wouldn't have expected flies to have been swimming in the bottle the bartender just poured your drink from.   This is why the health inspections are important.   Still, it isn't very comforting to hear about one after the fact.  One friend of ours was very disturbed to know hear this as they had been to Gold Diggers the very day before the inspection.

What is even more disturbing is that Channel 13 reported on this and visited the Gold Diggers at the Golden Nugget to talk to them about it.    They reported:

Contact 13 spoke to the hotel's food and beverage manager who said this isn't their proudest moment. He wouldn't go on camera or allow us inside.

Isn't their proudest moment?  In our opinion that is an terrible response.  Management should be aware of the situation in their establishments and certainly not have this cavalier response to potential health hazards to their customers.  Yes, they have now cleaned up their act and received an A grade.  Hopefully, the management and employees have had a refresher on the regulations and health standards necessary as well.
