Laughlin citizens are invited to attend 3 free
Leadership Forums on Wednesdays April 25, May 2, and May 9, all starting at 5
P.M. Pacific time in the meeting hall of the Richard Springsteen American
Legion Post 60 1510 Bruce Woodbury Drive, located a half-mile east (downhill)
of Needles Highway.
The first Forum’s speaker will be Scott
Hammond, seeking the Nevada Third Congressional District seat; followed by
Clark County Assessor Michele Shafe and her deputy Briana Johnson; and
concluding with Glen Leavitt, seeking to succeed Melissa “Missy” Woodbury who
is retiring as the 23rd State Assembly District representative. He will be
accompanied by former Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury.
In his legislative career that began with a
term in the Nevada Assembly, Hammond served on the Education, Health-Human
Services, Transportation, Government Affairs, and Judiciary Committees.
Hammond, as an Indian Springs High School
basketball coach, guided the Thunderbirds several seasons ago when they
competed against the Laughlin Cougars.
Born in Syracuse, N.Y., he earned his bachelor’s
degree, then a master’s degree in 1997, from the University of Nevada-Las
Vegas. He taught social studies and Spanish in the Clark County Schools
District for 16 years. He and wife Sonya have 4 children.
Shafe and Johnson’s program will feature a
PowerPoint presentation on the several exemptions or reductions allowed local
property owners on their tax bills, and the deadlines for which to apply for
each.
Johnson is seeking to be elected to succeed
Shafe, who in previous Forums displayed charts of the ratios over the years of
the residential and commercial sections to the total taxable values of property
in Laughlin Township.
Leavitt, 42, is married to Rebecca Woodbury,
and is a 5th generation Nevadan.
They have 3 girls, ages 14, 10, and 6. He spent 9 years in public
affairs with the southern Nevada Regional Transportation Commission and owns a
financial services company in Boulder City where he chaired the Planning
Commission in 2017-18.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in political
science from Brigham Young University and his master’s degree in public
administration from UNLV.
“Nevada residents also are reminded that they
have only until Tuesday, May 15, to register to vote or to change addresses and
party affiliation for the June 12 primary election,” said LEDC President Jim
Maniaci.
“The primary is used to select each party’s
candidate for the Tuesday, Nov. 6, general election positions; those who
register non-partisan for the primary will receive sample ballots listing only
the non-party candidates, including judges,” he added.

The Pioneer Hotel and Gambling hall will discontinue all gaming tokens and gaming chips on April 29, 2018. Any person in possession of these chips and tokens may redeem them for cash any time between April 30 and August 31, 2018 at the cage at the Colorado Belle Hotel and Casino 2100 South Casino Drive, Laughlin Nevada 89029. The Colorado Belle reserves the right to refuse redemption of these chips and tokens after that date. Management reserves all rights.
Additionally, The Pioneer Hotel and Gambling Hall will cease redemptions of all slot point values as of midnight on April 29, 2018. Prior to that date customers may redeem their current accumulated point balances for cash and comp at the Pioneer.
