Lunch at the Outback Steakhouse - Aquarius Casino Laughlin, NV

Despite a not so great experience the last time we had dinner at the Outback Steakhouse in the Aquarius Casino (Laughlin, NV) we were invited to lunch there so decided to give it another try.

Date of visit:  October 2012

We got there just after they opened for lunch so they were not busy except for a few people eating at the bar.  Service was fast and prompt.   We were given the lunch menu but also told you could order from the dinner menu, which is left on the tables.

We chose the:

Cup of French Onion Soup and the Blue Cheese Pecan Chopped Salad

and

1/2 Filet Focaccia Sandwich with a Side Caesar Salad  (this is a lunch combo for $7.99)

The soup was very good and as always the Blue Cheese Pecan Chopped Salad was excellent.  It is one of the Premium salads listed on the menu but worth a buck or so more than the regular salads.

The Focaccia Sandwich was tasty as well, though they did give an overabundance of a too big cup of the au jus.  The bread was good and the filet was tender, didn't even need to be dipped.

Both salads were very, very cold however.  Perhaps because we had come right after they opened or maybe they are stored prepared in a too cold refrigerator.  We didn't notice this on other occasions. We let them sit at room temperature for a bit before eating them. They were both very good after doing this.

Topped the meal off with 2 Fosters on draft (small ones since after all it was just after noon).

We enjoyed the lunch.  The cost was a bit higher than we could of gotten elsewhere on the strip for an inexpensive lunch but we enjoyed it.  If you want something slightly different than the diner or fast food or a burger, the Outback is an ok choice for lunch.

4 Deuces at Harlows in the Golden Nugget Laughlin

Golden Nugget Laughlin

Harlows Restaurant

The 4 deuces is a breakfast special they offer at Harlows in the Golden Nugget Casino in Laughlin, Nevada.   You need a players card to get this discount.  They are free and you do not have to gamble or play to take advantage of the specials.

Harlows is a good quality diner restaurant next to the tropical atrium just inside the front doors of the Casino.  Clean, airy, good prices, good food. The staff every time we have gone has been friendly and goes out of their way to make it a nice experience.

The 4 deuces is a special for $1.99 before 8am, $3.99 from 8-10am. You get two eggs, two bacon slices, two sausage patties, and 2 pancakes.  Plus if that is not enough (why wouldn't it be?) you can add a side of hash browns or toast.   Unlike some other Casino restaurants, the servers here suggest and recommend the special to you instead of hiding it.  We didn't see any signage for it but were informed about it when handed our menus.

Granted, everything but the eggs must be ready to go in bins or very close to it because our order came out super fast.  Then again, nearly everyone seemed to be ordering it so they may just have the items being cooked continually.  It was hot and fresh so we had no complaints.  Hard to beat a breakfast for 2 or 4 dollars.  The coffee costs more than the meal if you are there early enough.  Good value, good food.

Was busy, but service was still good.  Line to check out was a bit long though.

P.S.  Not judging, just wondering...you can even come to breakfast wearing two different slippers!

A visit to Baja Blue Restaurant at Harrahs Laughlin...Finally.

Restaurant Review   -  Baja Blue Restaurant & Cantina

Located in Harrahs Laughlin (Casino)

Harrahs Laughlin

Date of Visit:   Mid October 2012

After nearly a year we happened to be at Harrahs when two things coincided, we felt like trying something "Southwestern" and Baja Blue was actually open.

Even though it was a weekend, the place was only half filled and we were seated right away.  It has a nice atmosphere with the standard Southwestern decor.  Surprisingly it was a bit noisier than expected.  They have a very good menu with a good variety of choices.   They also specialize in Tequila including tastings and flights on the menu.  We opted for a Corona and a Absolut Calada (Absolut Vodka with piña colada mix, pineapple juice and strawberry purée) instead.  Both were very good.

Even before we ordered they filled the table with a large basket of tortilla chips and cups of Salsa and a warm bean dip.   The chips were delicious and seemed homemade.  The salsa and dip were also very good and fresh.  Luckily for us we hadn't ordered bigger entrees as it is easy to fill up on the chips.

Our three choices for food were the Chicken Burrito, the Beef Chimichanga, and the Shrimp Tacos.

The Chimichanga was prepared as expected, in a crisp flour tortilla with a small serving of Spanish rice and refried beans.  It was covered in an Enchilada sauce and included pico de gallo and sour cream. We all agreed that it was good, though nothing extraordinary. No one especially cared for the flavor of the sauce.  The Baja Burrito was better than the Chimi. It was also served with Spanish Rice and refried beans and covered with the same sauce as the Chimichanga.  The onions inside slightly overwhelmed the chicken in our opinion and could of been used more lightly.

Both items were $10, which was a good price compared to some of the other features on the menu.  In addition if you love Burritos, they do offer an "El BAndito" Burrito weighing in at over 3 lbs! If you  accept the challenge and can clean your plate you win a Free T-shirt.  We didn't actually get to try the Shrimp Tacos because apparently the server put the order in as Shrimp Cocktail entree, even though it was on the menu as an appetizer.  Perhaps this was due to the noise in the restaurant.   We didn't know it until it was brought to the table as a main course.  Given we had to be somewhere, we didn't have time to reorder.   This turned out to be a good thing though, as the Shrimp Cocktail ($12) was very good.  They were jumbo shrimp, very fresh, with a citrus slaw on the side.  Overall we liked them more than the other choices we ordered.

We decided to skip dessert and go over to Baskin Robbins (also located in Harrahs) for a scoop.  As always if you love ice cream this is a good place to get it in Laughlin.  Especially since the Dairy Queen (formerly in the Outlet mall food court) has closed.  If you go and they have the World Class Blue Ribbon and the Pumpkin Pie, try them!

Our overall impression of Baja Blue was satisfying, though we expected slightly more.  It definitely was much better than Casa Serrano.  We are looking forward to comparing it soon to some of the places recommended to us across the river in Bullhead City.

The chips with salsa and the Shrimp Cocktail were the best part.  Perhaps this is also a great place to sample some of the bar choices with one of the many appetizers that looked good.   Service was good, the value and quality were good.  The chips, salsa, and dip were free.  Our server also did not charge us for soft drink (multiple refills).  This alone would sometimes be 2.50 to 3 dollars.  With tax and tip our tab was about $60 for three people, including 2 Coronas and the Absolut Calada.

We look forward to trying Baja Blue again in the future to try some of the other menu items that are marked as specialties.

They are currently only open for dinner hours from 5pm to 9pm on select nights.  The Baja Blue Bar is open on Saturday-Sunday, 9am-9pm (perfect for football viewing).  Check with Harrahs at harrahslaughlin.com for more details, the current menu and current hours.

Lunch at Harlows in the Golden Nugget Laughlin

Review
October 2012
Harlows Restaurant in the Golden Nugget Casino, Laughlin, Nevada

Harlows is a nice little diner type restaurant tucked in one corner of the Casino floor next to the Atrium filled with a sort of Jungle theme.  Very good prices and value for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, especially if you take advantage of the specials.   They even hold a Sunday brunch.  Staff is very friendly, though at times service can be slow even if they are not really busy.

BLT

The BLT at $7.99 seemed a bit skimpy, with not alot of any of the three parts that make a BLT.   It was however declared to be one of the best tasting BLT's in the local area by the person who enjoyed it.    The same was said for the French Onion Soup.  Usually you see this soup served in a bigger bowl or crock.  This was actually a tiny cup but only cost $2.49 so it was a good value.  We have heard the Burgers are among the best in Laughlin, so tried the Mushroom Swiss Burger ($9.99).  It was cooked as ordered, the mushrooms were done perfectly, the bun was fresh. Overall a very good burger.  The best in Laughlin?  We enjoyed it but try one and let us know what you think.

Mushroom Swiss Burger

Two soda's at $5 brought our tab to $27.53, perhaps a bit higher than expected but it was still a good lunch.

If you have a Golden Nugget players card, you can use your comps at checkout.  They also honor the Landry's Select Card.   Apparently, you cannot use both the Landry's card and Players card at the same time though.

Be sure to check out the specials if you are there for breakfast or early dinner (blue plate specials).

Blue Plate Specials from 3-6PM Sunday through Thursday
* We haven't tried the Fried Chicken Special but have heard rave reviews about it.

Harlows Champage Brunch is 9am to 2pm on Sunday.

Colorado River Levels low this week in Laughlin, Nevada

The Colorado River levels around Laughlin, NV and Bullhead City, NV will be much lower this week than normally seen.  This is due to reduced water demands.  This water release is controlled by David Dam, just north of the area.

Colorado River

A visit to to Colorado River on 10-6-12 showed just how low it was.  We were able to walk well out into the River and for a brief time could even go under the Bridge that connects Laughlin and Bullhead City.
