The long-awaited EZYFAST Pharmacy will be opening in Laughlin on December 18, 2014.  

Laughlin Buzz welcomes Pharmacist and Owner Ezekiel Kesitilwe and his staff.  It is wonderful to have a new business in Laughlin.

Signs of El Burro Borracho at Harrah's Laughlin

Update:  12-22-2014    Sneak Peek at the El Burro Borracho menu and restaurant opening soon at Harrah's Laughlin

The latest Buzz we have heard is that  Guy Fieri's new restaurant at Harrah's Laughlin will be called El Burro Borracho.   

Awhile back, Eater Vegas had contemplated that the drunk ass might be kicked to the curb and the place called Guy's Cantina.  

Now signs on social media indicate the Burro is back and the restaurant will in fact be called El Burro Borracho.  

We discovered this sign for El Burro Borracho.  The name translates to mean "drunk burro" or "drunk donkey" or "drunk ass". 

    

Other information on social media showed that Guy Fieri made a stealth visit to Harrah's in Laughlin last Saturday for some oversight, taste testing, and meeting with the staff of El Burro Borracho.

There is even a short, raw, unedited video clip of Guy doing some tasting in the kitchen with the staff. 

The opening date still has not been officially announced. Training and construction seems to be on-going. 

The latest date we heard was as "soft opening" on December 27th with a Grand Opening early in 2015.   This is all tentative and could change day to day.  

Stay tuned for more details as we hear them.  

A official announcement should be forthcoming very soon if they plan to open before the new year.

The Laughlin Buzz Facebook group is a great place to hear the latest buzz from locals and visitors.  Earlier today, Joe Klein shared the following dining "scoop" about Gold Diggers and the Deli located in the Golden Nugget Laughlin.

Joe wrote:

About a month ago, the GOLDEN NUGGET in Laughlin started offering a pretty cool food special in the GOLDDIGGERS lounge. They call the special LATE NIGHT BITES and it's available starting at 10PM, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays only. (It's supposed to be offered until 6AM, but I wouldn't count on getting it served to you after 1 or 2 AM. Best to order it in the lounge between 10 AM and midnight, as the club can totally empty out by 1 AM.)

There are two late night specials for an unbelievable $1.99! (with a 24-Ct. Players Club membership, which is free). One is a SIRLOIN STEAK AND 2 EGGS breakfast, served with hash browns and choice of toast. I tried it last week and, much to my surprise, the steak was GREAT! It wasn't a quarter-inch thick, over-cooked piece of leather. Instead, a nice THREE-QUARTER-inch cut actually cooked medium-rare! Really yummy! The other "two-buck special" is a 2-egg, bacon, sausage and pancake breakfast, which I haven't tried yet. (Can you blame me? Steak and eggs seems like the obvious choice here!)

Now, here's the "scoop" part of the post! Recently I got to know one of the GN's food and beverage managers and, late last week, he told me that plans are now being finalized to add a "grill-top" to the casino's "Deli" stand so they can grill burgers and steaks there, and offer them in addition to the cold, deli-style sandwiches currently on that venue's menu!

The best part? There are now plans to offer the "late night specials,"
every night of the week at the Deli (located in the north-east corner of the main casino floor) once the new grill is in place. Once the specials are offered there, the specials will most likely no longer be available in the Gold DIggers lounge.

This would be a welcome, and very nice, additional dining option for the Golden Nugget. It will be nice to be able to grab a late-night burger, or have a great breakfast for two bucks!

Here's the menu poster that's put up outside of Gold Diggers on Tuesday and Wednesday nights! Next time you're up late and on the strip, give it a try tonight...or tomorrow night!

December is sometimes called the "slow season" in Laughlin.   Here is some of the events going on through the end of the month, plus various closings, renovations or random observations.

The Buffets at the Tropicana (reopens Dec. 24th), Aquarius (reopens Dec. 25th), and Laughlin River Lodge (reopening unknown) are closed for renovations, cleaning. etc.



If you want to visit the Buffet at one of these check with the property beforehand.  To our knowledge the Buffets at the other Hotels/Casinos are up and running as usual.

The Loading Dock Bar and Grille at the Colorado Belle is closed for renovations (in spite of just opening in February of this year).  Word on the River is that they may be changing some of the decor, the floor, and even adding booths.  The restrooms adjacent to the Loading Dock are also closed and we have heard one reason for the renovations is due to a plumbing issue with the rest rooms.  Time will tell what is actually going to change inside the Loading Dock.  Rumored re-opening is Dec. 27th.

At the Tropicana Laughlin the popular Caboose Lounge is closed for remodeling.  No word on when it will open.

Cafe Aquarius (at the Aquarius Casino) is closed through December 24th and reopens on Christmas Day. 

At Harrah's Laughlin the Beach Cafe will be closed from December 15th-24th for repairs.  This is their 24 hour cafe/diner so during this time the Buffet is going to be open 24 hours.  

The Water Taxi service is closed for maintenance and cleaning.

At the Aquarius they have been repaving and fixing the Riverwalk directly behind the Casino.

If you want to get from or to the Riverside from the Aquarius you have to go through the Casino to do so. No word on when it will be completed, but they seem to be working fairly fast.

At the Edgewater Hotel Casino they have closed the Santa Fe Tower to cut back on labor costs during slow season. Reopening currently unknown.

The Riverside Buffet (and the Restrooms and Bar next to it) at the Riverside Resort are being remodeled.

Last time we were there the Buffet was still open in the midst of the construction around it.  Check ahead to be sure if you are going to visit.

Over at Harrah's Laughlin Guy Fieri's new restaurant, El Burro Borracho, is still being put together.  The original opening projection was December and the latest we have heard is December 27th pending completion of construction.

At the Edgewater work continues on the Dunkin Donuts being built behind the temporary walls right by the main entrance.  Expected opening is also in December.   When DD opens the Coffee, etc shop and perhaps the Yogurt-A-Go-Go may be closing.  Nothing definite on that yet.

Other Random Observations and Events for December

BumbleBerry Flats at the Pioneer Casino is now open 24 hours.  They have a new late night menu from midnight to 6am.

The annual Christmas Tree Silent Auction is going on at the Aquarius through December 19th.  The beautiful collection of themed trees are lighting up the lobby of the Resort.  If you like one make a bid and take it home (or donate it to another family) after you win the auction.

The Colorado Belle and Edgewater will be presenting their annual Fireworks Display over the River on New Years Eve.

Finally, if you are in Laughlin on Casino Drive you may notice some of the new art or wind sculptures.  The project to beautify the median is still on-going and was supposed to be done by the end of November.  It is not pushed into December with no word on when it will be completed.

Burros and Dollar Bills

A Visit to Oatman, AZ

Oatman is an old Gold Mining Town Dating back to the late 1800's.  The town is located up the mountain hill from Laughlin, NV and Bullhead City, AZ.  The famous old Route 66 road passes right through the middle of town.

After several years of hearing about how wonderful the little mountain town of Oatman is we finally made our first trip there.   Despite the crowds of people we were surprised just how much we enjoyed it.   Here are our pictures and a bit of background about Oatman.

The "Wild" Burros

There is little doubt that the burros that wander the streets of Oatman are the main attraction.  Some people say that without them the town would lose it's appeal and tourism.  The burros are descendants of burros brought here by the miners in the late 1800s.  Each morning they come into town looking for food.  Shortly after the sun sets they go back into the foothills of the mountains for the night.

Burro food is sold at a few of the shops.  Carrots are sometimes brought by visitors but are discouraged.  According to a couple shopkeepers we talked to, the carrots make the burros more aggressive and may cause other health issues.  And here we thought carrots were good for you.  They do seem to shun the burro food if they know carrots are in the vicinity.  On a busy day like it was when we were there they seem to eat all day long. 

The Bureau of Land Management now discourages the feeding of the burros completely and fines can be given, but this doesn't appear to be enforced.    For the most part the burros seemed docile and friendly.  We did see one braying loudly after being rejected while becoming amorous with another female.  Luckily this was off the main street.   If they see you have other food besides the burro food some become more aggressive too.  Even for candy or ice cream cones.  Other people have reported burros reaching in their car for food.    Just keep in mind they are wild animals and despite their sleepy disposition they can be a hazard.  Watch out behind them for a random kick.  We have even heard of people visiting the hospital with a finger bite. 

The Burro's don't seem to be bothered by anything.  Not loud cars, motorcycles or even a random dog (leashed).  But don't bring your dog for their own and the burros safety. 

 Oatman (the tourist area) is basically one street lined with shops and attractions.  The street is one lane each way with wooden sidewalks.  Burros, of course, have the right away.  Inside the shops there is a vast array of just about anything Oatman and Arizona related.  Many of the them sell handmade products, leather goods, knives, Indian jewelery and many other unique items. We went later in the afternoon and stayed until sunset so didn't get to visit very many of them.

On the weekends they stage old west style gunfights on the main street.   We heard one happening but were at the other end on the Saturday we visited.  So, we missed it. 

The Oatman Hotel is one of the most visited attractions.  Built in 1902 it still looks the same as we expect it did back then.  Historians say it is the oldest two-story adobe structure in Mojave County.

 In years past it has housed miners, politicans, and even the occasional movie star. The most famous were Clark Gable and Carol Lombard, who honeymooned at the Oatman Hotel March 18, 1939. 

The Oatman Hotel is rumored to have it's own ghost named Oatie.  One sign said he is often seen on the stairs leading up to the second floor. 

 

No Oatie was seen in any of our pictures of the hotel. 

The bar and restaurant of the Oatman Hotel are covered with dollar bills that have been signed by visitors and stapled or taped to the walls, doors, and even all the way up to the ceilings.  One estimate is that there is over $100,000 in singles on those walls.  It is hard to even find an empty spot and many are taped right on top of other ones.  Some are very old and yellow with age.  This pic below is just one tiny section of the wall by the door to the restaurant. 

The Hotel restaurant has a standard menu with burgers, etc.  The food was good, priced for tourism (three of us split an appetizer, two burgers, and three soda's for about $34). They were out of many menu items the day we were here. But it was late and the crowd was probably much bigger than expected due to the beautiful November day.  It's not fine dining but where else can you dine surrounded by so much money, atmosphere and maybe even a burro looking in the window at you.

Beaver Mining?

Feel like getting married in Oatman?  They can even host a shotgun marriage ceremony for you.  We saw the little wedding gazebo on the main street but missed the picture of it. 

On the fourth of July it gets hot enough that they hold an annual fry an egg on the sidewalk contest. 

Other events are scheduled periodically.

We will be back to visit again and recommend the little diversion from the "big city" of Laughlin. Especially since we discovered how easy a drive it is.  We recommend going up Boundary Cone Rd off of Hwy 95 as the easiest, fastest route.  Here is a map (click on it for a larger view):

The other route apparently has more curves and takes longer even if it seems closer to Laughlin.  

Tip:  Time your visit so you are leaving as the sun sets and catch the amazing sunset coming back down the hill.
