Pizza in Laughlin

Pizza at Pints Microbrewery and Restaurant in the Colorado Belle

Who has the best Pizza in Laughlin?

After hearing many people say how good it is, we finally tried the Pizza at Pints in the Colorado Belle.

They only have one size Pizza, which is cooked in a brick type oven you can see from the dining area.  This gives the impression they would have very good Pizzas.   Pricing starts at $8.99 for a pie with just sauce and cheese.  Additional toppings are 99 cents for meat toppings and 79 cents for veggie toppings.  Pretty good pricing in our opinion.

We had some wings as an appetizer and split one of the Pizzas (three of us).   One of the three of us loved it, the other two thought it was good, just not really good.   Part of the reason was it was just a tiny bit overcooked (see pic) and the crust was borderline on burned in parts.   The cheese was a good quality, the veggies were fresh.  We opted for the Italian Sausage instead of our normal Pepperoni choice.  This wasn't our favorite part.  Small flavorless pieces of sausage.

Service was terrible once again.   Often this seems to be the case when we have been here.  First of all we visited the day before River Run was about to start.  Already there were alot of "biker crowd".    What was funny was as they sat people they were segregating by age and crowd.  Not in a negative discriminatory way, but they were seating older people and those with children to the far right part of the restaurant and everyone else over in the main part by the bar.  As our party was mixed age they shuffled us into the "older" section.   Our waitress was terrible.  Slow, didn't know anything she was asked, and we could see her off to the side in a room just standing there doing nothing instead of coming out to her tables.  Other staff brought the food and drinks.  No one bothered to clear dishes or ask if we needed anything else or how the food was.

Pints English Brown
As always the beer was great.   We even learned after we had a pint that they offer a bigger 22 oz. glass (called a Tall).  So of course, we had to have one of those too!   Had never been told that before, or perhaps it is a new.

22 oz. Tall

While it wasn't bad Pizza, the search will go on for the best Pizza in Laughlin.

Movement at the Colorado Belle Casino

Laughlin, Nevada

Just before River Run we noticed they had taken out a large area of slot machines out near the windows in the Colorado Belle Casino.   Soon thereafter they started to put up walls and build a fairly large room.  Just before River Run started it was finished.

Latest update is that this is going to be the new location for the gift shop.  The gift shop is currently on the upper (second floor) level.   Understandably, the shop will probably receive much more business right on the Casino floor near the River Walk.

New Gift Shop space completed but unmarked as of 4-27-13
The only other places remaining upstairs after Mangia, Tortilla's, and the Cafe closed are the Captains Buffet, Mark Twain's, and the video arcade.   This is a shame as it is a nice big, fairly well decorated space.

Parking and Rules for Laughlin River Run 2013

Rules for enjoying and staying safe at the 2013 River Run.

Respect the "No Colors" policy in effect at  all Laughlin casinos and even at the Laughlin mall. Each property may have specific rules so check with them.  In general also no weapons, chemical agents, etc are not allowed.

No public nudity is permitted.

No glass bottles or aluminum containers are allowed on Casino Drive from noon on Wednesday, April 24, until 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 28.

Helmets are required in Nevada and California. They are not required in Arizona.  They are also not required at the Avi Casino or the surrounding Fort Mojave Indian Reservation.  No sandals or flip flop type shoes on a motorcycle.

Finally there is a curfew for minors (17 or younger) on Casino Drive from from 6 pm to 6 am  Wednesday, April 24 until Sunday, April 28. Minors in that area must be accompanied by an adult during the time of the curfew

Parking and Traffic gets to be difficult at times.  Be aware of pedestrians and bikes everywhere.

Some tips:  Bikers can obtain parking spots at reserved parking sections at most of the casinos.  They even offer reserved, secured lots (for a fee).  Space for cars is at a premium, and garages fill up fast.  Valet is usually limited to only guests of the hotel or players club members. Other parking spots include the Outlet Mall.  This again will fill up fast.

Silver Rider (the bus service in Laughlin is offering shuttles along Casino Drive) however will not run their regular service on Casino Drive itself.  For more details see   http://laughlintimes.com/articles/2013/04/24/news/local/news880.txt

Bullhead Farmers Market

Bullhead Farmers Market
We have been hoping to hear that the proposed Farmers Market in Laughlin (at the Regency Casino) would happen.  Still no word on whether it will or won't ever come to be.   Having come from the East Coast a few years ago, we miss the abundance of good locally grown produce available at Farmers Markets.  Recently we heard that once a month a Farmers Market is held in Bullhead City, AZ.  Bullhead is a short hop over the bridge (just past the Riverside Resort and Casino) from Laughlin.   The market takes place on the third Saturday of the month.

We dropped by around just after 9am.  They are open from 8am to noon.  However, even at 9am there was already a lack of items left.  There are about a dozen different vendors selling everything from spring mix, Swiss Chard, spinach, beats, grapefruit, oranges, tomatoes, beets, salsa, trail mix, baked goods, pickled items, peppers, jams, and other miscellaneous farmers market type items.  Triple Farms was the most popular one with items still left (such as the beets pictured below).

Beets

We were lucky to pick up some lettuce and greens but not so lucky in that most of the other items we wanted were already sold out.  The market seems very popular and next time we plan to get there when it opens at 8.

A band supplies some entertainment while you shop.  Overall it was a pleasant experience.  One which will be even better if the vendors can have a larger supply or we get their earlier next time.

Come buy and support your local area.  Buy Locally!

Here is a direct link to the Bullhead Farmers Market Facebook page.

The market is located at

2255 Trane Rd. (Ken Forvargue Park)
Bullhead City, Arizona 86442
This is just a few miles down few miles down Hwy. 95 after you cross the bridge from Laughlin to Arizona.

Roundhouse Buffet - Dixieland Brunch at Tropicana Laughlin

Review of the Dixieland Brunch at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada

The following is a Guest Review from a loyal reader.

Last Sunday we visited the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada to redeem free play we had received in the mail.   We got extremely lucky and ended up winning a hundred dollars.  It was approaching 11 am and we noticed we also had a 2 for 1 coupon for the Roundhouse Buffet.   We figured you couldn't go wrong for $12.99 for two of what was advertised, Dixieland Brunches.  Friends had told us they had gone in the past and enjoyed it.

There was no line so we were seated right away.  This was a stark contrast from the lines we usually find at a couple of the other Casino Sunday brunches.  Included in the cost of the brunch is one ticket for a glass of champagne.  We thought that was odd since other places we have tried either give you unlimited or at least two glasses.  We had to go up to the champagne bar to get it, at first no one was there and other people were waiting.  So, we went to get food first (after we had gotten a plate of food an employee finally appeared at the champagne bar).  When we finally did get our glass of champagne it was a huge one, though in a plastic cup.  I guess the size makes up for only being given one glass.

The food was alright. There were the usual breakfast selections and several choices of other dishes like fried chicken (way overdone), carved ham (average), and several different Mexican style selections.  There was also this big (very dry and tasteless) breakfast pizza.   We would be hard pressed to call the buffet good or recommend it.  Certainly not if you are paying full price.  Definitely not as good as the Sunday brunches we have had at Aquarius, Harrahs, or the Golden Nugget.   The best (and freshest, hottest) dishes were the pancakes, sausage, bacon, and fruit selections.   Dessert choices were limited and what they did have were all very dry.   There were sugar free choices we did not try.  They do have four machines that dispense fat free yogurt and ice cream (soft serve).  Plus toppings.  Is it wrong to take fat free yogurt and add whipped cream and Carmel?

We did like that at this buffet you can go get your own drinks from the machines set up.  Soft drinks, coffee, hot chocolate, juices.  No waiting necessary for the servers to get them for you.  However, we seldom saw a server and between plates they did not clear the dirty dishes very promptly.

Finally, perhaps they discontinued the brunch as a Dixieland brunch.  We had heard that there is usually a trio of performers playing as a dixieland band in the dining area of the brunch.  None were seen or heard during the entire 1+ hour we were there.  If they have stopped doing it, and that is possible, they should remove it from their website and advertising.  As of when we were there it was still advertised as such.

We generally love all the dining choices at the Tropicana in Laughin.  The Steakhouse is one of our favorites. Carnegie's Dining Car has good food.   Even the small Mexican restaurant and Italian place have pretty good choices at great prices.  The Roundhouse Buffet isn't quite up to par with the food quality or service.  From now on when we visit the Tropicana we will most certainly go to one of the other places.

Luckily, with some comps on our players card and a discount, the entire brunch for two of us only cost us a couple dollars.  That's a real deal.  In retrospect we did get to relax, sit, and enjoy our coffee and champagne after a nice bonus win in the casino.

Lunch at the Cafe in the Aquarius Resort and Casino

Visited April 2013
Restaurant Review

Cafe Aquarius in the Aquarius Resort and Casino, Laughlin, Nevada

We had not been in the Cafe Aquarius for several months and decided to pop in for a quick bite to eat.  Place was half empty and unfortunately we had to wait far too long at the podium for someone to seat us.  This always seems odd when it occurs.  Especially when other staff pass by and see people waiting.

Once seated service was prompt, though as often encountered in Laughlin, it seems friendly but slightly less than professional.

One person in our party just wanted an appetizer and chose the Chicken Wings.  He asked the waitress how they were prepared, specifically if they were breaded or not.  She seemed unsure and said they were not breaded but were in a buffalo wing sauce.  This is how he wanted them so they were ordered.

We also ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with Sweet Potato Fries and a second order of the hot Turkey Sandwich (substituting french fries for the mashed potato), and a side salad with Blue Cheese dressing.

In the past we had been very pleased with the burgers here.  This time it seemed smaller, dryer and not as tasty.  The bun wasn't even as fresh as we recalled before.  See our older review at the end of this post for another burger review in the past.

Burger on this visit

The presentation wasn't as nice either.  See last time here. The Sweet Potato Fries seemed overcooked both in taste and color. They were thrown on a plate, whereas last time they were in a nice little side basket.  The bacon on the burger was also way overdone.  Lettuce, tomato and pickle were also provided, these were fresh and good.  The waitress for some reason brought a cup of mayo (without us requesting it).  Before we had considered the burgers here as one of the best we had tried in Laughlin, but after this visit the ranking has slipped considerably.

The hot turkey sandwich was a huge portion.  Enough for two people really.

Hot Turkey Plate

In fact, we took half home for another meal.  The turkey was good, fresh, tasty, not dry.  The bread was thick and fresh too.  Covered in gravy it was a hearty (although not so healthy) meal.   The gravy could of been a little hotter.  Often it is hot when they prep it but by the time it makes it to the table and is enjoyed it starts to get cool.  Green beans as a side were good, not the canned variety.

The side salad was fresh and good size.  Blue cheese was sort of runny, not one of the best but ok.

The wings were another matter.  None of us really cared for them.  They were Breaded after all, really we should of sent them back but didn't.  They were very big wings. Too big.  At least they were thoroughly cooked through.

Biggest - Breaded - Chicken Wing Ever
The breading sopped up the hot sauce and although they were edible we certainly would never get wings here again.  Lesson learned.  Stick to the Boneyard (just across the river in Bullhead City) or even Pints (Colorado Belle) or Buffalo Wild Wings (Bullhead City) if you want good wings.    They came with two wilted pieces of celery and carrot sticks and a big bowl of the runny blue cheese dressing.

In conclusion, the quality seems to have slipped a notch at Cafe Aquarius.  Prices are still a good value. Our tab with drinks was about 30 dollars before the discount.  You do get 10 percent with an Ace Players Card and can also use comps off your card if you have them.  The Cafe is still not a bad place to grab something to eat if you go in expecting cafe type food.  We still sort of prefer Carnegies Dining Car at the Tropicana Lauglin for our go to diner/cafe in Laughlin.

Goodbye Joe, Hello Bubba

Sunday, April 7, 2013 - Laughlin, Nevada  at the Golden Nugget Casino

Walking past local favorite, Joes Crab Shack, on the Laughlin Riverwalk we were surprised to see the outdoor dining deck closed and all the furnishings stored on it.

Outdoor dining deck of Joes Crab Shack

Inside a half a dozen workers were busy (on a Sunday) ripping up the floor.

No more Crab Pots!

Joe's Crab Shack is being remodeled and turned into a Bubba Gumps.  Both restaurants are owned by the Landry Group.  Unconfirmed reports are that it will be closed only a short time, a week or so.  That remains to be seen, though we are sure they would like it to be open by the Laughlin River Run 2013 at the end of the month.

Laughlin Town Center (not Casino Drive)

A couple weeks ago we noticed that they appear to be in the process of painting/changing the color of the buildings that are part of the Laughlin Town Center.    Work seems to be slow but it will make for a nicer, cleaner look once it is completed.  Half the buildings are now one color and the rest are another.  Parts of certain sections are both colors. Perhaps upon completion it will even help bring more businesses and visitors to the Town Center.

Old Movie Rental Store, now vacant

Laughlin Town Center

Buildings Half Resurfaced a new Color

Many people who visit Laughlin don't even venture up to or know the Town Center exists.  To get to it from Casino Drive you simply go up the hill (Bruce Woodbury Drive) that is directly across from the Edgewater Casino.  Approximately 3 miles you take the first left onto Needles Hwy.  Just a short way down the hill you will pass the Laughlin Library, then the Post Office, and come up on the Town Center.    This part of Laughlin is also surrounded by much of the Laughlin residential area.

What is currently located at the Town Center?

On the corner in front of the Town Center is the Mobil Gas Station.  For the record prices at this station are substantially higher than just across the River in Bullhead City.  Often they are even higher than the prices of Terrible's station on Casino Drive.

The Laughlin branch of the DMV is located here.  This is very small but there is seldom a line (they are so small the numbers you get to wait your turn are handmade with a sharpie on paper).  Did you know that Clark County and NV considers Laughlin to be rural so you do not need a Emissions inspection if you live here and register your car?

The only "grocery" store in Laughlin, Aldapes, is also located here.  Be warned, selection is very limited and prices are very high.  Shopping here is best done on a need-to-have-it-because-we-just-ran-out-of-it basis.   They are open 24 hours.

Dining options at the Town Center are somewhat limited but are ok.  The problem might be that most people don't know they are here or from the highway don't notice them.  Or might not think the area looks appealing enough to stop.

Mama Mia's has pizza, subs and more.   Good lunch specials.
Humbertos - Mexican
Alberto's  -  small diner, very friendly, decent prices and excellent Broasted Chicken (worth waiting for).  Thi sis next to the lounge with video poker (the lounge is open 24 hours).
Brown Bear Coffee -  good coffee, lattes, even serve breakfast and lunch now.  Small but has a counter and a few tables and chairs.

There are two hair salons, a couple realty businesses, the Southern NV health office, the Laughlin Times newspaper office, CMA Cable, local television TV2 offices and studio, a check cashing/loan offices, and tax preparation, insurance businesses.

The local laundromat that was there closed, as did the Pizza Hut which was just down the street from there.  Oddly enough no franchise or fast food type businesses exist up on the hill at the Town Center or nearby.  Given the many apartment complexes and residential area we would think one would be able to thrive there.

There are many empty, unoccupied units in the center.  It would be wonderful to see new businesses open up.  It would be nice to not have to always run over to Bullhead City every time something is needed from the store or to obtain a specific service. The face lift seems to be a good step, next they need to fix or replace the aging sign. As it is the Town Center does not look very appealing from Needles Highway and there really aren't many destination stores or businesses that would bring people to it.   Perhaps the owners and local "politicians" need to find a way to stimulate, encourage development of the Town Center and help make it more visually and economically important as a part of Laughlin. A new smoke shop did open recently, not exactly the type of business that the area needs, but at least someone is trying.
