Pioneer, Change The Lightbulbs!

Laughlin, Nevada

Pioneer Hotel and Gambling Hall   (the Pioneer Casino)

The Riverwalk by the Pioneer is one of our favorite spots to walk, especially early morning or in the evening.  The sun rising or setting and the lights from the path and the River Rick Cowboy sign create an enjoyable walk.

The walk is lined by wooden rails, there is an outlook point, and a small beach area.

In the Best of Laughlin survey the Pioneer won the Best Riverwalk area award.

But.....it can be better, with a few simple fixes and some additional pride in the appearance.

For over 4 years there has been a problem with burned out light bulbs on the Riverwalk path.   We have never walked this path without a good number of them being burned out.  Not just 1 or 2, either.

The other day we were walking from the Colorado Belle to the Golden Nugget and out of curiosity did a rough count of how many were burned out.  Don't quote us on the exact number because some may have been missed.

The light bulbs are easy to access by simply removing a few screws, lifting the globe, and replacing it.   Can't they have someone check and replace these once a week, if needed?

The light bulbs they appear to be using the long lasting energy saving bulbs.  So change them and forget about them for a long time.

Only one Globe was missing and should also be replaced.   You can see the type of bulbs being used and the screws that simply attach the globes over the bulbs.  These are very easy to change.

The first set of lights were completely burned out and had some trash hanging off of them.

These are roughly the numbers of burned out lights on this path.

On the side closest to the River:
25 of the 99 lights were burned out.

On the side closest to the Hotel:
25 of 90 lights were burned out.

Total  50 lights out of 189 were out.  That is over 25%.

Only three of the globes were missing or damaged and could also be something one of the employees checks on weekly.

Also, the clock is never the correct time.  In fact, we don't even know if it works.  This should also be fixed.

One last thing.  The entrance to the Riverwalk from the Pioneer (on the Colorado Belle side) is like a junk yard.   This short path to the Riverwalk is a real eyesore as an entrance.

The rustic old west themed sign still needs a paint tough up and some framing.  Plus graffiti is now present on it.  Does Laughlin (or the Pioneer) really want to present the image of street graffiti for their guests and visitors to see?

It is like the Pioneer is saying go that way....but just please ignore all the junk, trash and mess you are going to pass by.

Just past the sign and before you turn the corner to the walking path where the lights are, the Pioneer generally stores junk, pallets, or things removed from the property.  This particular day there was far more junk than we remember being stored there.   But it always has been a mess.

Again, this is not a great sight for anyone about to take a walk on what was named the Best part of the Riverwalk in Laughlin.

Clean this up.  Honestly, there is no reason for it.

What would the cost be to fix all this?

Perhaps less than $200 to change all the light bulbs.  Plus a few hundred more to clean up the entrance path and replace or touch up the sign.  Add a little paint and a better wall/gate to hide the storage and maintenance spots behind the walls.    Have an already employed staff member sweep up, check the bulbs and remove any trash regularly.

Come on, Pioneer, you can easily make it look nice instead of feeling like a inner city alley.

We love Laughlin and take pride in the area and community.  The Casinos and Hotels play a big part in the image that is projected.  We are sharing this only to help initiate some positive change.  To help improve the look of the area and instill some more Laughlin Pride.

Updates will be added when or if things change.

Laughlin/Bullhead Airport - Air Service Grant Press Release

LAUGHLIN/BULLHEAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

*******FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE*******

Point of Contact: Jeremy Keating, Airport Director
Information #: (928) 754-2134 or JKeating@FlyIFP.com

Date of Release: July 23, 2015

AIRPORT TOPS $1.1 MILLION IN MATCHING PLEDGES
FOR AIR SERVICE GRANT

BULLHEAD CITY, AZ / LAUGHLIN, NV - For the first time, local and regional pledges to help restore scheduled air service at Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport have topped $1.1 million. Airport officials are using those pledges as a local match to again help secure a federal air service grant for the Tri-State area.

The final tally shows $530,000 in cash pledges, along with another $608,000 of in-kind support, from local and regional individuals, businesses, government agencies and organizations. Numerous letters of support were also included in documents submitted to the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).

Mohave County Airport Authority (MCAA) is applying for a Small Community Air Service Development Program (SCASDP) grant of $750,000 to be matched with the local pledges and contributions. The SCASDP is a grant program within the USDOT designed to help small communities address air service and airfare issues. Following extensive reviews, grants are normally announced by early fall.

"Topping $1 million is a truly remarkable feat," said MCAA President John Hastings. "It should send a positive message to the USDOT that our Tri-State region understands the importance of restoring quality, scheduled airline service."

A recent analysis conducted for MCAA by Sixel Consulting Group indicated that new scheduled airline service, along with the expanding charter flights for Laughlin casinos, is an economic development driver. In data provided to the City of Bullhead City, scheduled air service to a world-class hub, such as Denver, would create 14,000 new visitors annually and generate over $17 million in local economic impact.

Hastings again emphasized that the revenue guarantee funds may never be used if the air service is successful, but having the funds and the grant make a stronger case during negotiations.

Airport Authority officials have met and/or negotiated with a number of airlines in recent years. Two scenarios are current priorities: flights to and from Denver International Airport, or flights to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Each would provide connectivity to and from much of the country as well as much of the world. Both year-round and seasonal service has been explored. Flights would benefit both leisure and business travelers, most of whom currently use McCarran International Airport, 100 miles away in Las Vegas.
The Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport is one of the busiest non-metropolitan passenger airports serving Arizona, Nevada and southeastern California. Although traditional scheduled service ended 14 years ago, daily commercial service to more than 130 cities in the U.S. and Canada is operated by Sun Country Airlines with Boeing 737s and Republic Airways with Embraer 190s, as scheduled, scheduled charter and charter flights for the Riverside Resort and Harrah's Laughlin.

Dirty Dining (again) at Coco's in Laughlin

Laughlin Restaurant Inspections

Laughlin, NV

Coco's Restaurant
Edgewater Resort Casino
Date of Inspection:   July 15, 2015Inspection by the Southern Nevada Health District*

Here are the latest Southern Nevada Health District Restaurant Inspection report posted for Coco's
Restaurant. This is public information taken from what is posted on their website (as of 7-20-15).

The inspection process shows two separate inspections for the Restaurant and the Cook's Line.
Each is shown below.

Overall the restaurant received a B grade with 20 demerits including violations for Handwashing,
keeping food protected from potential contamination, pest control, proper washing of kitchenware,
and facility maintenance.

List of violations:

Previous inspections:

The Cook's line at Coco's had a even worse inspection, with a C grade and 30 demerits.  (SNHD
will normally close a facility if they have more than 40 demerits).   What is more alarming is it wasn't
that long ago, on April 2, 2015 they also had a bad inspection, with a C grade and 28 demerits for
the Cook's line (see details here) .

Violations include handwashing, temperature controls on food, protecting food from potential
contamination, and several others.

Previous inspections show a long of poor results:

In summary, we won't visit or dine there until some obvious management issues with regard to
adhering to the health codes and cleanliness have been put in place.  It has been quite a long
time since we visited after our last bad experience there with a dirty dining room and unfriendly
service.    Just recently on our Facebook Group, a visitor at the restaurant had even shared that
they were told there was no toast to go with breakfast because their toaster was broken
(for the 2nd time).  See below:

Background info on the inspection process:

An "A" grade is the top grade an establishment can receive.  Generally if any grade less than an
A is received the restaurant can and does have a re-inspection shortly thereafter after correcting
any violations.  Keep in mind there is a lag time between when the inspections are performed and
when they appear on the Southern Nevada Health District Website.  A restaurant may have been
inspected or re-inspected (in the case of a low grade) since the data was posted.
When a reinspection is done the list of violations/demerits from the prior low grade is no longer viewable.
All restaurants are required to have their latest grade certificate displayed for the public to see.
If you don't see one, ask.

Note:  We do update this article when new/re-inspections are posted.

Hibachi Buffet in Bullhead City, Arizona

Laughlin, NV   Bullhead City, AZ

Hibachi Buffet
Review

Once in awhile we cross the border from Laughlin, Nevada into Bullhead City (Arizona) for lunch or dinner.  After hearing several raves about the newly opened, Hibachi Buffet we had to stop in one evening.

The Food

As an All You Can Eat Buffet it has a fairly big selection of items ranging from standard Chinese Buffet items, to Sushi, to a Mongolian Grill section.   Plus a standard salad bar, dessert section, ice cream machine, and even a chocolate fountain.

We went when it was busy so they were quickly putting out fresh food whenever the bins were empty.   Four of us were together so we tried just about everything among the group.  The quality was a definite improvement over the previous occupant (the China Buffet).    The Mongolian grill was the best part.  You choose what you want from the items and they grill it fresh for you.  It seemed most of the patrons when we were there preferred the other parts of the buffet.

The desserts were the worst part, but who has room for dessert if you go to a buffet?
The ice cream was more like frozen ice milk.  The other items were the typical mass produced Chinese Buffet desserts, which are usually tasteless.  They had fruit you could skewer to dip in the chocolate fountain, but NO strawberries among the choices.  We didn't see anyone use it

The Prices

Ranging from $7.99 for lunch to $10.99 depending on what time and day you go, the prices are a good value.  Drinks are extra.  For four of us (4 buffets and 4 drinks) the tab was 52 dollars.  We would recommend going for lunch or if you like being an early bird, get in there just before 3:40PM, which is when it switches to dinner pricing.   You can also get take-out and are charged by the pound.

Prices and menu subject to change by owner.  Current as of this posting.

The Service

As soon as you walk in you have to pay and then go to the hostess stand.   Friendliness was missing, it sort of felt like we were in a cattle call.   The staff that came to the table was also indifferent to guests dining (not just just to us).

The entire inside of the dining area has been remodeled since it's China Buffet days and looked fine, with both booths and tables available.   It was much nicer than before.

If you are looking for an alternative to Panda Express and want more selections or a lot of food, check out Hibachi Buffet.   It's not gourmet Chinese (but neither is Panda) but it is good for the price, especially at lunch.

Laughlin Restaurant Inspections for June 2015

Laughlin, NV

Date of information:   July 1, 2015

Going out to eat for the 4th of July Holiday Weekend?

Here are the latest Southern Nevada Health District Restaurant Inspection grades for June of 2015. This is public information posted on their website.

An "A" grade is the top grade an establishment can receive.  Generally if any grade less than an A is received the restaurant can and does have a re-inspection shortly thereafter after correcting any violations.

Keep in mind there is a lag time between when the inspections are performed and when they appear on the Southern Nevada Health District Website.  A restaurant may have been inspected or re-inspected (in the case of a low grade) since the data was posted.  When a reinspection is done the list of violations/demerits from the prior low grade is no longer viewable.

All restaurants are required to have their latest grade certificate displayed for the public to see.  If you don't see one, ask.

Note:  We do update this article when new/re-inspections are posted.

In the most recent inspections, one Laughlin restaurant is received a grade lower than an A.

The restaurant/inspections that fell below the A grade in June are detailed below:

Burger Boys -  Laughlin Mall Food Court
Grade:  B with 19 violations on 6-24-2015
Information posted below was on the SNHD as of July 1, 2015

** Important Update - as of July 9th, Burger Boys has a new, restored A status. They had worked on fixing the few issues the inspector had and it wasn't until today they finally got a revisit and reinspection. Currently, Laughlin restaurants are inspected out of the Henderson Office.

The pic below shows the violations the inspector noted on 6-24-2015

A re-inspection should be conducted within a couple of days.  After contacting the owner we believe he has already addressed these issues.  Once the inspectors return in a a few days, we expect Burger Boys will be back to an A grade.  The owner stated the cause was due mostly to employee error.  He also shared that corrective actions have been administered, as well as upping cleaning regimen and methods to ensure that it doesn't happen in the future.

We have been to Burger Boys and love their food and prices.   See our latest review here.

Pint's Restaurant and Pint's Kitchen -  Colorado Belle Casino

Pint's Kitchen received a C Grade with 30 violations on 6-5-2015
Pint's Restaurant received a B grade with 19 demerits on 6-5-2015
Both have since been reinspected and carry a current A grade as of 6-11-2015
Information posted below was on the SNHD as of July 1, 2015

Pioneer Casino Inspections

It also look like one of our favorite places also ended up on the list with a not so great inspection.

Bumbleberry Flats, which is where the Boarding House was, must still be listed in the SNHD records by their old name.   The Boarding House (now Bumbleberry Flats) received a C with 31 demerits on 6-3-2015 and on reinspection on 6-18-2015 was back to an A  grade.

You can visit the  SNHD  website to look up restaurants in Laughlin or anywhere in Southern Nevada. There is a search feature.  For Laughlin use Zipcode 89029.

Keep in mind, once a restaurant has a re-inspection the original list of violations is no longer viewable. Once a  reinspection is done, the previous inspections go into that category.
