Prime Rib and a Burger at the Regency

Prime Rib and a Burger at Daniel's Restaurant in the Regency Casino
Laughlin, Nevada

A group of three of us were going to go to the Outback but there was an hour wait (good thing we didn't get in as they had a bad health inspection days before we were not aware of). So, we headed down the Riverwalk a hundred yards or so to the Regency.  We kept hearing rave reviews about the Prime Rib at the Daniels (in the Regency Casino) so we figured this was a great time to try it. There was no wait to get in, about half the tables in the small restaurant were filled.

Two of us ordered the Prime Rib, the regular cut, priced at $15.99. This included a salad or soup, veggies, a potato, and dinner roll. We were tempted to go for the King cut, which was $22.99. The other diner ordered a Western Burger with curly fries.  Our waitress, Amy, was wonderful, refilled drinks, very friendly.

This is the pic the Regency uses to advertise their Prime Rib - obviously a King Cut

This is what we were served, a regular cut.

One person declared the Prime Rib to be "amazing" and one of the best they ever had. He wished he had got the thicker king cut.  This regular cut was a bit thin. The other one thought it was just good, not the best ever.  It was cooked just right (medium), but seemed to lack a bit of flavor.

So, one person said they would come back again for the Prime Rib and the other said if they did it wouldn't be for the Prime Rib but only for the Burger special.  Either way the Prime Rib definitely was better than anything you can get at the various Laughlin Buffets, and better than the one we had at Outback in the past. It couldn't beat the one at Saltgrass Steakhouse in the Golden Nugget though. For the price it was a good value.

The side of mixed veggies: corn, carrots, peas, and some very think green beans seemed canned-like.  The salad was ok, but basic iceberg and looked a bit sad. The burger was delicious as ever.

The western burger was messy though, as expected.  For $9.99 it was a good deal but not as good as on Wednesday's when they are half price.

Overall we still love Daniels in the Regency and highly recommend the burgers and Taco Tuesday, plus their great breakfast specials.

Just days to go until the Laughlin Event Center Opens

We had to visit the Laughlin Outlet Mall today and saw that they still had not put the Laughlin Event Center sign up.  It should be anytime now, perhaps it was even done after we had left.   The main sign and the Reba McIntyre sign (she performs March 15th) was on the ground ready to go up.

Laughlin Event Center Sign

The sign is going up right by the back entrance to the Outlet Mall on Bruce Woodbury Drive.

The sign posts and crane

The mall parking lot there backs up into the Event Center property.   From the mall parking lot you can see into the back of the event center.  We stopped to take a look and crews were busy clearing the brush and working in the narrow area between the Laughlin Event Center fence and the wall of the mall parking lot.   Perhaps a barrier or wall of some sort is going up?

Looking from the mall parking lot into the Event Center grounds (beyond the fence)

Construction is still going on along Bruce Woodbury, only one lane is open by the Event Center site.  Here is the best picture we could snap of the configuration and seating for the first show, Championship Bull Riding, on March 8th.

With just over a week to go until the Laughlin Event Center is set to open, there appears to be much work to be done still.  We can't wait to see the finished project.

Where is the new Laughlin Event Center Located?

The Event Center is an outdoor venue and is located on Bruce Woodbury Drive.  This is a short walk (uphill) from Casino Drive. It is behind the Laughlin Outlet Mall.

Although they haven't released full details as of this post, parking is expected to be very limited or non-existent at the actual site. No word has been given yet if parking will be available at the mall.  More details about parking will be released when the date gets closer. Most of the Casino's will most likely be providing a shuttle service from their properties to the Event Center.  We will share more information about the event, seating, and parking when we hear it.  Bookmark us and check back or visit our home page at www.laughlinbuzz.com

The Laughlin Way?

Laughlin, Nevada

If you have read our blog or visited LaughlinBuzz.Com you may have noticed one of our pet-peeves is the lack of maintenance of the signs at the Pioneer Casino.  Here is the post that started it all.

Last week we shared pictures and hopes that the signs and River Rick at the Pioneer Casino were being fixed.  See   http://laughlinbuzz.blogspot.com/2014/02/signs-of-progress-at-pioneer.html

So far it looks like they have worked on it and managed to get two letters lit up.  The sign went from "HO BLING" to "HOTE BLING".

 Before and After Photo

When we were on our way to the Golden Nugget yesterday (midday on a Monday) we noticed the lift sitting unused in the grass, the wooden logs of the fence replaced with very attractive yellow caution tape, and no workers anywhere.

It's a rental from Home Depot, put it to use!

The base of the sign had been repainted

Now for a bit of our "opinion":

It seems around here progress is slow, things take time, projects are started and left at length.  Why start and not have a timetable and be prepared to finish it promptly.  For some properties around here this is the "Laughlin Way" of doing things.   Yes, nothing like a big project can be done immediately but it just looks bad and reflects poorly on the look and image of Laughlin when things are left unfinished.

We look forward to seeing what (and when) this work is complete at the Pioneer Hotel and Gambling Hall.

Outback Steakhouse Laughlin gets 27 demerits

Laughlin, Nevada
Once again another Laughlin restaurant popped up with a bad rating and too many demerits (for our comfort) on a recent Southern Nevada Health District inspection.  This time it was the Outback Steakhouse in the Aquarius Casino.

On February 20, 2014 during a routine health inspection they received a Grade of C (the lowest available) with 27 demerits.

Click on Images for a larger view

Most of these were for maintaining, cooking, storage of food at proper temperatures, as well as one violation for protecting food from possible contamination.

List of Violations and Demerits from the Southern Nevada Health District Website

Well, maybe there are a few rules?!
This hasn't stopped people from dining there, most likely unaware of the bad report. Just two days after the inspection (we were not aware of) we were at the Aquarius and someone in our group wanted to go to the Outback.  The place was packed and wait was 50 minutes to get in (luckily we didn't wait).

The previous inspection at the Outback was in April of 2013 and they received an A grade. Looking at the history of inspections, there has been other issues here in the past including being closed down in 2010.

Previous Inspections

We have had some good and a few not so good experiences at this location.  We have not been there in quite a long time.  Most of the bad experiences we did have were related to service.

*Note:  This Outback Steakhouse is not owned by Aquarius or their parent company, the proprietor listed is Archie Overton.

Other bad recent health inspections in Laughlin included the Riverside Resort Buffet (C grade, 14 demerits) and the Minato Sushi Restaurant (C grade, 40 demerits).

Visit the SNHD  website here to look up restaurants in Nevada. There is a search feature.  For Laughlin put in Zipcode 89029.

Update:  They did pass a re-inspection.  Details are here.

Laughlin - Livable City in Nevada List

Laughlin, Nevada

Laughlin ranked 13th.  Partial list (see full list at end of this post)
(click on images to see a larger version)

In a study by Movoto Real Estate, Laughlin ranked 13th out of 35 cities in their best places to live in Nevada.

Incline Village took the top spot, Gardnerville was 2nd, and Las Vegas ended up in 4th place.

Their study took into account a number of factors including cost of living, median household income, median home price, crime, amenities, student-to-teacher ratio, tax rates, unemployment and weather.

Out of the 35 cities in the report Laughlin's overall quality of life was ranked 9th best.  Other top rankings included 4th best for commute (we have virtually no traffic)

Lauglin was ranked low on weather (25th) probably due to the heat in the summer, though (in our opinion) that is way off.  Today was 79 degrees, sunny, no wind.  Two months of heat beats the snow, ice and cold like much of the rest of the country has been suffering under for weeks. The other poor ranking Laughlin received was in the higher unemployment rate.

Here is the entire list of 35 cities

River Palm Tree

Bullhead City, AZ, Laughlin, NV, Colorado River

When the Colorado River levels are normal, you may notice a lone Palm Tree that is growing in the River. On days the water level is low it is on dry land and you can sometimes walk out to it.  It is a nice walk along the river.

(click on images to see a larger version)

On the picture (above) you can see where the water level usually is when it is in the River.

Although you can't see it from the Riverwalk in Laughlin, someone has tied a yellow ribbon on it, just above the water line.

Looking across the River with the Aquarius, Edgewater and Colorado Belle Casinos downriver.

This is a video we shot one windy day when the Colorado River was low.

If you want to walk out to the Palm Tree, be safe and make sure you pick a day when the River is very low, and has been for a day or two.  This ensures the exposed river bed is dry and not mucky.  There is a small dirt parking lot down by the dock where the free boat ride departs (on the Bullhead City side of the river, across from Sam's Club).   It's not a long walk but is a fair distance.  Be aware you could encounter wildlife such as skunks or raccoons, fisherman, or even an occasional person "camping".   Enjoy the River, the view, and please respect the area leaving nothing behind (there are trash cans nearby).

Free Boat Rides to Riverside Casino

Free Boat Rides from Bullhead City, AZ to Laughlin's Riverside Casino.

Just across the bridge from Laughlin you can catch a free ride across the River to the Riverside Casino.  This boat (similar to the Water Taxi's) runs regularly during the day and evening.   Many employees use it, as well as other people to hop across the River to Laughlin.  The parking lot is located across from Sam's Club in Bullhead City.  It is almost directly across the Colorado River from the Riverside Hotel.

This is a free ride, not to be confused with the regular Water Taxi service which runs from Casino to Casino. This one only goes from the Bullhead City dock to the Riverside.

Loading Dock Bar and Grille is Open

The Loading Dock Bar and Grille in the Colorado Belle opened quietly today.  This was a soft opening.   We are sure a grand opening will be announced soon.  Even though the final touches on the Riverwalk are not quite complete, the restaurant was open and serving.

Entrance to the Loading Dock from the Casino Floor at the Colorado Belle

We didn't have time to stop in but we did manage to grab a few quick pictures.

The layout looks very nice, with plenty of space and even outdoor seating right on the Riverwalk.

Outdoor patio on the Riverwalk

Open but still a bit of work going on outside
It looks like there will be an outdoor bar.  They already have the pre-mixed drinks in the machines.  Perhaps this will be similar to the old Chill Bar.    Again, there seems to still be a bit of work to go before this is up and running.

We aren't sure what this is going to be (below) but they have been working on it right at the point of the Riverwalk directly across from the rest of the Loading Dock.

You can get into the Loading Dock from the Parking Lot side of the Casino, by using a door right here.  It comes into the Casino right by the restaurant.

There is some new carpet.

When we get a few chances to try the menu we will share our thoughts.  Meanwhile here is a link to the menu at the Loading Dock Bar and Grille.   View Menu

The menu is fairly extensive with many different choices.  Prices are about in line with similar restaurants of this quality, but may be a bit high for Laughlin.  This remains to be seen.

Surprisingly, they also have a Buffet in the Loading Dock.   Breakfast Buffet runs from 7am-11am and is $7.99.  This does include coffee but not other beverages, which will be extra.

They also have a Dinner Buffet that starts at 4pm.  $13.99 Sunday-Thursday and $17.99 Friday and Saturday.   They feature a carved prime rib on Wednesday and Chicken and Ribs on Thursday (sort of like the old Mark Twain's that was upstairs at the Colorado Belle?).

With the new Buffet in the Loading Dock opening, the Captain's Buffet upstairs is now closed.

Hours of Operation
Sun-Thur 7am-midnight
Fri-Sat 7am-2am

If you have visited the Loading Dock and would like to share a review or just a comment let us know below. Guest reviews are always welcome!
